History
The history of Berlin began in the 13th century when Berlin was the capital of Prussia. Prussia's power grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th century forming the German Empire in 1871-1918. In 1918, Berlin became part of the Weimar Republic and the communist party of formed. During WW II, Berlin was virtually destroyed by bombing. In 1945, the country of Germany was split among its victors, France getting the Northern section, Britain getting the Western section and the US getting the Southern section and Russian occupying the Eastern region. Berlin was also split among its victors into East Berlin and West Berlin. East Germany chose East Berlin as the capital of the Soviet occupied region. West Berlin remained under the rule of the Western allies. With the reunification of Germany in 1990, Berlin was restored as a capital and major world city.

Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate is built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg. It is located in the western part of the city.The Brandenburg Gate is a symbol of the tumultuous history of Europe and Germany and also the European unity and peace.
